That could well be the(almost) definitive list, all right. I know it’s easy to point out what’s missing… But, hey, where’s Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me” or Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman” But I’m surprised he didn’t include Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” that ’80’s anthem that became #1 the world over, and brought the Welsh singer fame ‘n fortune. I’m not surprised that Bruce Cockburn’s “Coldest Night of the Year” isn’t there, after all, he’s Canadian. And even though he is as famous there as The Other (born-in-the-USA) Bruce is famous here, he’s still not so well-known here. But it’s a great song about lost love, longing, etc. And shouldn’t Edith Frost’s “Easy To Love” be included, even if most people don’t know it? Maybe that’s a whole ‘nother list: unknown love and other catastrophes. Why not take a shot at making that list?
Of course, I’d add three obscure but instant classics on the subject, from the queen of heartache herself, Traceyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura):
“Tears For Affairs”, “French Navy” and “Forests & Sands”
I’m sure y’all could come up with some interesting playlists of songs not so-well-known but perfect songs.
